Less than a day after I posted my letter to my blog, and before the printed letter even reached Comcast, I received an emailed response:

Dear Mr. Bowling,
Today, my wife received at her Comcast email address, elided@comcast.net, your email message with the Subject line “Apology for Service Disruption”.
My wife’s email address is a secondary address on our Comcast account. I did not receive your email message on my Comcast email address, elided@comcast.net, which is the primary address on the account.
This is at least the second time this happened. The last time I noticed it, I attempted, unsuccessfully, to get your customer relations department to investigate and fix the problem. Then I attempted to get your New England Executive Customer Care department to both investigate and fix the email problem and address the failure of your customer relations department to do so. A copy of the email message I sent to that department, to which I received no response, is attached.
Comcast rolls out DOCSIS 3.0 in Boston, upgrades customers for free
Wednesday, December 31st, 2008We just received an email message from Comcast which read in part as follows:
Comcast Doubled Your Speed for Free!
Great news! As a Performance customer, we just doubled your speed for free! And with PowerBoost®, you now have downloads up to 15 Mbps!
The fastest fast from the new Comcast High-Speed Internet is now available in your area and it’s blowing other Internet connections away. Powred by our next-generation fiber-optic network, it’s the fastest Internet available—capable of speeds up to 50 Mbps.
I’ve confirmed that indeed, both my download and upload speeds have increased substantially. Before the change, my download speed was 6Mbps and my upload speed was about 384Kbps. Now, my download speed appears to average around 15Mbps, and my upload speed appears to average around 2.7Mbps. Not bad!
On the other hand, my recollection is that before this change, my “PowerBoost” speed (i.e., the download speed for the first few megabytes of each file transfer) was 20 Mbps, which means that the new PowerBoost speed they’re promising is less than what I had before. This is somewhat odd, but I suppose I’ll give up a bit of PowerBoost in exchange for sustained higher bandwidth.
All in all, it’s obviously a rather positive change, and kudos to Comcast for doing it for free.
Comcast lies about the speed of its high-speed internet offering
Tuesday, November 6th, 2007I wrote previously about how absurd it was that Comcast was selling a 6 Mbps internet connection whose upload speed was only 384 Kbps. As shown in the email exchange below, the problem was even worse than I thought — the speed of my connection was only 4 Mbps. After several rounds of arguing with someone at Comcast about the fact that I was lied to about the speed of the service before I purchased it, I managed to get them to increase my speed to 6 Mbps. Still, they refused to admit that their Web site is misleading (probably intentionally so), and they haven’t fixed it, so I’ve filed a complaint with the Massachusetts Attorney General’s office, not that I actually expect that to do any good.

Sign up for Comcast, kill trees
Tuesday, November 6th, 2007I have received no response to the letter below, which I sent to Comcast over a week ago. I can’t say that I’m terribly suprised. My opinion about Comcast continues to plummet. Names preserved to embarrass the guilty.
Comcast: The bloom is off the rose
Tuesday, October 9th, 2007I wrote previously about my positive experience switching from Speakeasy DSL and Verizon POTS service to Comcast High-Speed Internet and Digital Voice.
I’m sorry to say that I’ve had a number of rather bad interactions with Comcast since that rosy day. I’m not sure I can remember all of them, but here are some:
Review: Comcast High-Speed Internet and Digital Voice®
Monday, September 17th, 2007I recently switched from Speakeasy DSL and a Verizon land line to Comcast High-Speed Internet and their Digital Voice® local phone service. The executive summary is that I’m very happy so far.
