Support for Israel from Boston City Councilors is spotty

By | July 23, 2006

Several of Boston’s City Councilors, including Jerry McDermott, who represents my district, signed the ad in support of Israel recently published by the CJP. I sent Mr. McDermott a letter thanking him for his support. Alas, three at-large City Councilors, at least two of which I voted for in the last election, did not sign. I sent them letters as well:

Felix Arroyo:

Mr. Arroyo,

I voted for you in the last election, because when I asked Brighton’s and all the at-large city councilers for help getting the police to do something about the loud, all-night parties on my street, yours was the only office which assisted me.

I voted for you despite being advised against it by family and friends, who believe that you have proved yourself to be no friend of Boston’s Jewish community.

Your attendance at last week’s anti-Israel rally, and your failure to sign the statement in support of Israel which was signed by many other local, state and Federal officials, have convinced me that my family and friends are right.

I will not be voting for you again.

Sincerely,

Jonathan Kamens
Brighton

Stephen Murphy:

Mr. Murphy,

Several of your colleagues signed the ad, recently published in the Boston Globe and the Boston Herald, supporting Israel’s right to defend itself against terrorist attacks, including the ongoing rocket attacks by Hezbollah.

You did not sign. Do you not support Israel’s right to defend itself against terrorists?

Please know that support for Israel is an issue that I and many other members of my community take seriously at election time.

Sincerely,

Jonathan Kamens
Brighton

Sam Yoon:

Mr. Yoon,

I voted for you in the last election, but the wrong stance on this issue will prevent me from doing so in the next one.

Sincerely,

Jonathan Kamens
Brighton
