How to ensure that I won’t want to work for your company

By | February 24, 2023

I just received this email from “humanresources@agreeya.com”:

Hi

You have recently applied to a job at AgreeYa Solutions through Dice.

Thank you for your interest in AgreeYa Solutions. Your candidacy for this job and other opportunities will be under consideration. In the meantime, as per EEO requirement, here is an optional link for self identification.

Thank you
AgreeYa Solutions

There are problems with this message:

  1. There should be a comma after “Hi”.
  2. I have no record of having applied to a job at AgreeYa Solutions through Dice.
  3. There should be a space after the period after “consideration”.
  4. The phrase “as per EEO requirement” is not good English.
  5. There should be a comma after “Thank you”.

Obviously I’m nit-picking quite a bit here, but the key fact remains that I have no record of having applied to this job, and I’ve been keeping extremely careful records throughout my job search.

I sent to AgreeYa’s web site and found this:

Headquartered in Folsom, California, we are a team of 2200+ professionals delivering solutions to Fortune 100, medium and small organizations in verticals such as the public sector, financial services, energy & utility, telecommunications, pharmaceutical & biotech, healthcare and technology. We address our customers complex business challenges and exploit opportunities leveraging innovative technology driven solutions. Our team develops and delivers ideas that have the potential to stimulate growth, optimize cost, and enables success for our clients. AgreeYa’s results-driven and flexible approach ensures a predictable and consistent customer experience that not only meets their expectations but makes them want to come back.

Those are certainly words. Not good words, mind you, but words. In addition to the overarching problem that this is just terrible copy, there should be a comma in “2200+”; there should be an apostrophe after “customers”; there should be a hyphen in “technology driven”; and it should say “enable” rather than “enables”.

Again, I’m obviously nit-picking, but as the saying goes, you don’t get a second chance to make a first impression, so if this is the impression this company makes at the top of their home page, well, I think we have a pretty good idea of how competent the folks who work there are.

But wait, there’s more. I decided to respond to the email:

I have no record of applying to a job at AgreeYa through Dice, and I am therefore confused by and somewhat concerned about this notification. Can you send me a link to the posting of the job which I supposedly applied for?

My response bounced:

Diagnostic-Code: smtp;550 5.7.193 UnifiedGroupAgent; Delivery failed because the sender isn't a group member or external senders aren't permitted to send to this group.

Who knows, maybe I applied to work at this company through a job posting that didn’t provide the name of the company, though I think it’s more likely that they mined my résumé from Dice and failed to distinguish between that and me choosing to apply. But even if I did apply, after today’s events I’m certainly no longer interested in working for AgreeYa or engaging them to serve my employer.
