Kosher selection

[Last updated January 25, 2011]

UPDATE: The Waltham BJ’s is now stocking fresh David Eliot whole chickens; boneless, flattened, chicken breasts; chicken thighs; whitefish salad, American Kosher pastrami and other shrink-wrapped cold cuts; pre-made potato latkes, and a few other pre-made Kosher food items (I’ll try to get a more complete list the next time I go). It’s getting better, although there’s still plenty of room for improvement.

UPDATE: They now appear to be carrying flash-frozen empire chicken quarters, frozen whole empire chickens, and frozen empire turkeys.

The Kosher selection at the Waltham BJ’s appears to be extremely poor.

I was unable to locate a dedicated Kosher food section in the dry goods, refrigerated, or frozen foods section.

The only kosher meats I was able to find were some frozen empire chicken and turkey products.

The only Kosher cheese I was able to locate was Cabot cheese with the Tablet-K certification, which is not accepted by many (probably the majority of) Orthodox Jews who keep Kosher.

This dismal selection of Kosher foods is disappointing, given that I and others contacted BJ’s before this new store opened and urged them to carry a good Kosher food selection, apparently to no avail.

It is also disappointing given that pretty much every supermarket in the area nowadays has a dedicated Kosher food section, and the Costco in Waltham is carrying (at least) Kosher chicken, beef and fish.

I have contacted BJ’s again on this subject and I urge others who care about the availability of Kosher food in the area to do so as well.

I was told several weeks ago by a representative of BJ’s that the regional operations manager “is aware of the [Kosher food] situation and is working on it while we are speaking,” but the only change I saw after that conversation was the addition of some frozen Empire chicken and turkey products, which isn’t terribly impressive.

That sounds great. How do you know all this?

I’ve heard that CostCo is having a lot of trouble moving its extensive Kosher inventory. Given that, I’m surprised that BJ’s would do what CostCo did.

BJS WILL LEARN BY TESTING THE MARKET. PRICE, SELECTION AND QUALITY WILL DRIVE THEIR BUSINESS FOR KOSHER. I’M SURE THAT COSTCO WILL GET A HANDLE ON IT AS WELL AND IT WILL BECOME A GOOD BUSINESS. THE PEOPLE IN ALL AREAS WILL NEED TO LEARN THAT THESE BOX STORES ARE CARRYING THESE ITEMS AT EXCELLENT PRICES. WHEN THAT HAPPENS THEY’LL FLOCK TO THOSE STORES IN THE FUTURE. HAVE YOU CHECKED OUT BJS LATELY?

Your optimism is touching, but once again, I ask you, do you have any actual knowledge of BJ’s plans, or are you just guessing?

I have, in fact, “checked out BJ’s lately.” I check out their Kosher selection every time I go, which is at least once a month. It has barely changed at all since my initial posting. Certainly, I have not seen “fresh CHK Kosher chicken, glatt CHK fresh beef, frozen pizza, salads, chalahs, etc.”

This was posted over a year ago. In that time, exactly one small case of Kosher food has shown up at the BJ’s in Waltham. I’m not sure it has any of the items listed above, let alone all of them, and whatever it does carry changes from visit to visit.
