The Mastodon and LinkedIn postings that started it all

By | February 28, 2025

I’m trying to use my blog here as a kind of time capsule of the work I’ve been doing to fight DOGE and Trump since I went public with it on February 14, so just for the record, I want to capture here the original Mastodon and LinkedIn postings that got people to start paying attention to me and gave me the platform to reach people and tell them what’s happening and why they should care.

My Mastodon posting the night of February 14 got 1,045 boosts and 737 favorites, which is enough action to be kind of like going viral in the fediverse. 😉 I’m not going to embed the whole thread here, but here’s the first message in the thread:

BREAKING: A bunch of U.S. Digital Service employees (including me) were fired tonight. It's still unclear exactly how many. There is no visibility whatsoever into what determined who was let go. Legacy USDS (i.e., pre-DOGE) leadership was not involved in the decision about whom to let go and was not notified in advance that people were going to be fired.

My LinkedIn posting the next morning ended up the top post linked to from the top story in LinkedIn’s “Top stories” home page sidebar for about 12 hours. It ended up getting over 153,000 impressions, over 1,300 reactions, over 200 reposts, and over 150 comments. This really was “viral”, and this is what led me to having the platform that I have, at least for now (I don’t expect it to last long!), to speak out about what’s happening in a way that people can understand and relate to.

Around 50 U.S. Digital Service employees, approximately 1/3 of the remaining legacy staff, including me, were fired last night. There is no visibility whatsoever into what determined who was let go; I am fairly certain I was illegally fired due to political considerations, i.e., disloyalty to the administration.
Legacy USDS leadership was not involved in the decision about whom to let go and was not notified in advance that people were going to be fired.
Before I was fired, I was in charge of information security for VA.gov, which has millions of users per month and stores and processes huge amounts of veterans' personal information. I've been told by people I've worked with that I'm the best at what I do of anyone they've ever met. Now there will be no strong information security leadership for VA.gov, putting veteran privacy at risk.
Does this seem like improving government efficiency?
I encourage everyone reading this to call your U.S. Senators and Representative and ask them why DOGE is firing the people who are needed to keep veterans' personal and health information safe.
I also encourage federal workers and anyone who considers themselves an ally of good government to connect with Federal Workers Against DOGE, @federalworkersagainstdoge on Instagram or @https://lnkd.in/eTq59XEU on Bluesky.
This week's illegal firings of high-performing workers leaves no room for debate: federal workers are about to be penalized whether they speak out or not. So I ask federal workers is: when will the benefit of complying with DOGE become so insignificant that it becomes *advantageous* to speak out and disobey them? I believe that line has now been crossed.
