Letter in today’s Herald: backyard pools are a safety hazard

In a recent tragedy, twin toddlers drowned in their family’s backyard in-ground pool. Two articles in a row in the Boston Herald mentioned that the authorities were investigating how the twins drowned despite the fact that the pool had a cover. There seems to be a widespread misconception, which the Herald articles exacerbate, that pool… Read More: Letter in today’s Herald: backyard pools are a safety hazard »

Yad Sarah: Good work, bad fundraising

I periodically post about organizations which can’t handle one of these two simple requests: (1) don’t spam me; (2) don’t send me junk mail. If an organization is incapable of implementing effective policies and procedures to accommodate these two straightforward requests from donors, they are probably also incapable of implementing effective, efficient policies and procedures… Read More: Yad Sarah: Good work, bad fundraising »

I guess I’m a Mozilla add-on developer now

I just released a port of the “Send Later” Mozilla Thunderbird add-on for Thunderbird 3.1+. The old version is not compatible with Thunderbird 3, and its author and maintainer appears to have abandoned it. I’d love for him to integrate my changes into his version and resume maintaining it, but in the meantime, for the… Read More: I guess I’m a Mozilla add-on developer now »

Stabbing this morning in the Leather District

Police have taped off Beach Street between South and Lincoln Streets in downtown Boston’s Leather District this morning. I asked an officer who was keeping people from entering the area, and he said there was a stabbing. Photo:

Can you say “pandering to the elderly”? Tim Cahill can.

According to Margery Eagan in today’s Herald, both Deval Patrick and Charlie Baker support “some type of road testing for the elderly.”  Independent gubernatorial candidate Tim Cahill?  Not so much: “I don’t want to take away licenses from able-bodied people or force them to go through a driver’s test,” he said.  What the Legislature did,… Read More: Can you say “pandering to the elderly”? Maybe the T should ask the people who drive cars about changes to bus schedules?

The MBTA just spent $900,000 in federal stimulus money to buy 25 new buses for use along Route 28 (Mattapan Square to Ruggles Station).  These longer, articulated buses don’t fit in the current bus stops, so the stops going to have to be enlarged, eliminating between 60 and 92 parking spaces along a stretch of… Read More: Maybe the T should ask the people who drive cars… »

Herb Chambers Honda gets in on the “fake important letter” scam

This came from Herb Chambers Honda a couple of days ago: This one is a tiny, tiny bit less deceptive than the Honda Village mailings: notice how it has the word “Auto” hidden in the return address! The mailing inside was also deceptive.  No, actually, it was an outright lie.  It’s one of those “trade… Read More: Herb Chambers Honda gets in on the “fake important letter”… »

First impressions of the new Waltham BJ’s

I’ve posted some price comparisons and comments about the Kosher food selection at the new Waltham BJ’s on this page. Executive summary: You can save a lot of money on the stuff they carry, but the Kosher food selection is bad. I’m going to keep updating this page with additional pricing information and any changes… Read More: First impressions of the new Waltham BJ’s »

At least Delta handled it better than Continental did

http://news.yahoo.com/s/y_clevelan/y_clevelan_ts2493 “WOIO TV reports that Delta Airlines accidentally put a girl bound for Cleveland on a Boston flight last night, and stuck a boy bound for Boston on a Cleveland plane.” “The situation is a very serious one,” said Delta Airlines spokesman Paul Skrbec.  Yes!  Somebody actually gets that what parents want when something like… Read More: At least Delta handled it better than Continental did »
